Get a scrappy start to the month of May in the Pokémon GO Battle Showdown event.

For the first two weeks in May, be on the lookout for more Fighting-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO! Pugilistic Pokémon such as Mankey, Machop, Makuhita, and Meditite will appear in the wild more frequently, and watch out for cute and hard-to-find Tyrogue hatching from Eggs more often.

What would a Pokémon GO Battle Showdown event be without extra rewards for battling? You’ll get double the XP for taking on Gyms and raids. When you interact with a Gym, you’ll get double the XP toward earning a Badge as you usually earn. When you spin the Photo Disc in a Gym, you’ll receive more items than usual. Finally, when you’re successful in a raid, you’re guaranteed to receive a Rare Candy, and whether you win or lose, you’ll earn 3,000 Stardust—six times the usual amount!

The event runs from 1 p.m. (PDT) on May 1 until 1 p.m. (PDT) on May 14, 2018. Don’t miss out on a fortnight’s fun of Fighting-type Pokémon and fierce battles!

Pokémon GO has debuted a new event

To kick off the month of May, and it will focus on an often-overlooked type.

The Battle Showdown event will increase of the spawns of fighting-type Pokémon all around the map, in addition to other bonuses that will be live for the next two weeks until May 14th. You will get 2x XP for gym and raid battles, 3,000 stardust for doing any raid, guaranteed, and at least one piece of rare candy.

Gyms are getting temporary buffs as well. They’ll have a 2x badge multiplier for more benefits at your favorite gyms, and spinning gyms will give you more items. There’s no word on what special boxes might be sold for this event, but I’d be amazed if there weren’t any to go with it.

As for the fighting types that will be showing up? Across three generations, here are the fighting types, or part-fighting types that you might see show up. I’m not sure if they’re more likely to hatch from eggs as well, but that would be my guess:

  •  Mankey
  • Primeape
  • Machop
  • Machoke
  • Machamp
  • Hitmonlee
  • Hitmonchan
  • Tyrogue
  • Hitmontop
  • Makuhita
  • Hariyama

Fighting types aren’t exactly the most glamourous in Pokémon GO, but Machamps and Hariyama in particular can be pretty useful against certain raid bosses, so I would definitely try to hunt down some high IV versions of those, either in the wild or through evolutions.

This is definitely a different event from what we’ve seen in Pokémon GO, as I haven’t seen many that focus so heavily on pure gym and raid bonuses. Gym have been kind of left behind in the Pokémon GO meta, with their rewards not really keeping up with other activities in the game, and I still think the entire gym concept needs some reworking, even after the last update several months ago that dramatically changed them from launch. It’s still not where it needs to be.

Nor is, I would argue, the entire combat system of Pokémon GO. I really do wish they would go back to the drawing board for combat, and while I’m not expecting a return to turn-based, I do think that they need to focus on improve combat in this game dramatically, as it’s one of its weakest elements, even if it’s serviceable enough at the present moment. It could be so much more, and I hope they continue to improve up on it.

The Battle Showdown event starts today at 1 PM PDT, so get ready to collect those fighting types.
