We are Niantic Inc. Our games and websites (the “Services”) use cookies, which are small text files that are installed on your computer or device by a Web server when you access our Services. We can install and access cookies and similar technologies on your computer or device, which are called “first party cookies.” There are third parties that can also install and access cookies, which are called “third party cookies” and are described later.
We use cookies and local storage to monitor the general use and web traffic of our Services, personalize and improve our Services, help you navigate our Services, deliver content tailored to your interests, and show you advertisements.
We also use web beacons (also called web bugs, pixel tags or clear GIFS), which are small graphics with a unique identifier that can be included in our Services to, for example, install or communicate with cookies, monitor and measure the performance of our Services. , track how many visitors view our Services, and monitor the effectiveness of our advertisements. Unlike cookies, which are stored on a user’s hard drive or device, web beacons are often embedded invisibly on web pages (or in an email message).
We use the following types of cookies:
- Strictly Necessary Cookies : These cookies are essential for you to be able to use the Services, for example, navigate our websites and use their features (eg, cookies that allow you to log into the Services).
- Performance cookies: These cookies collect data about how and when you and other visitors interact with our Services (eg, which pages are viewed most frequently), and the data collected by these cookies is used to improve the performance of our services.
- Functionality cookies: These cookies allow our Services to remember the options you have chosen (such as your login details) and provide personalized content and functions for you. For example, relevant content is served to you by using a cookie to remember which region you are in.
- Advertising Cookies : These cookies are used to show you advertisements that are more relevant to you and tailored to your interests. For these purposes, we may also share this type of data with third parties.
The types of cookies described above can be “session cookies” or “persistent cookies” . Session cookies are only stored on your device while you use the Services, and are deleted when you end your session in the Services or close your browser. Persistent cookies remain on your device for a period of time after you log out of the Services or close your browser.
Some cookies may be installed by third parties when you use the Services, since certain third-party providers that we contract (including third-party advertisers) may install their own cookies on your hard drive or device. These cookies can provide data to said third parties about your browsing habits or can be used for security purposes. Some even help show you ads that are more relevant to you.
For example, our websites use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. (“Google”). Google Analytics uses non-operational cookies, which are text files that are installed on your computer to help the website analyze how visitors use the website. The data generated by the cookie about your use of the website (including your IP address) will be transmitted to Google for storage on servers located in the United States. If we so request, Google will use this data to evaluate how the website is used, compile reports on website activity for its operators and provide other services related to website activity and internet usage.
Similarly, we use the Facebook pixel service. The Facebook pixel is an analytical tool that allows us to measure the effectiveness of our advertising by understanding the actions you take on other websites. We use this tool to ensure that our Facebook advertising is displayed to the correct audience and is effective. When you visit our websites and take an action, the pixel is activated, reporting that action to Facebook.
By using our websites, you consent to the processing of data relating to you by Google and Facebook in the manner and for the purposes described above.
Cookies installed by third parties when you visit third party websites or services
Niantic and its Services are also present on third party websites and services that are not hosted by Niantic. If you visit or use third party websites and services, those third parties may install cookies or similar technologies on your computer or device. For more information about what cookies or similar technologies are used by these third parties, read the cookie policies of the third-party services.
